Carlos Meekins was named executive principal of Duncanville High School after previous principal Dr. Andre Smith took a position in another district. Meekins, who previously served as principal at Desoto’s freshman campus, has served in education for over 20 years.

“I believe with every fiber of my being that the work we do (as educators) is the greatest work,” Meekins said. “It is the only profession where you have to be engaged emotionally, intellectually and physically to all people, all the time, all year long. I understand that as principal.”

Meekins introduced himself to his staff prior to the start of school. He spoke about how he is a father to seven children, with one on the way. He also revealed that he volunteers with the youth at his church. Interim Superintendent Dr. Deborah Cron, who was tasked with hiring him, said this love for children was one thing that made him the ideal candidate for the position.

“He is a student centered guy, but he also really cares about staff,” Cron said.

Meekins said that it is his mission to take care of his staff, who in turn can then take better care of their students, creating a better environment.

“As teachers, we all want our students to be successful, regardless of what we teach,” Meekins said. “So it is the administrator’s job to provide whatever resources you need to be successful. I don’t believe in red tape, so if we can make it happen for you, and it’s going to accelerate the group academically, then that’s what we’re going to do.”

Meekins said he has very high expectations for himself.

“I take leadership very seriously,” Meekins said. “I believe it’s my job to make people better.”
