Dystopian societies are all the rage when it comes to teen fiction these days. Divergetn by newbie writer Veronica Roth is the next book to be a fair competitor to Hunger Games. It is enticing and creative. I really never thought that I would want to be in a time like this one. I had always had a soft spot for Hunger Games, but now I think it’s going to be shaking between the legs once Divergent brings in the readers.
Beatrice Prior live in a dystopian Chicago that is divided into two fractions. Each of these fractions are based off three different virtues. Candor- the honest, Abnegation- the selfless, Dauntless- the brave, Amity- the pity, and the Erudite- the intelligent. These are the choices that every sixteen year old has to make to devote the rest of their life to. For a Abnegation like Beatrice it isn’t that easy of decision. For she is labeled Divergent. And she can whatever she wants to be. She could either be the what she has always been or who she really is. She can’t pick both. So, when she makes her decision it’s surprises everyone. Even herself. During the simulations Beatrice changed her name to Tris and is given a chance to be a different person. As a Dauntless, she has to be the complete opposite of the self she was with her family. She makes new friends and is doing things she thought she would. But then her society gets dangerous and factions aren’t as homey as Tris thought. Tris has to make a choice. Whether to fight with her faction or fight for what is right. One Choice can make a difference.
Divergent is phenomenal. The characters were created perfectly for each other. The character Beatrice Prior was more realistic in this dystopian themed book. Unlike Katniss Everdeen. I have to admit I did like Katniss, but the whole romance thing made my me want to pull my hair out of my scalp. Beatrice made her decision on who she liked and really there wasn’t even a second guy. It was all Tobias (aka Four) And speaking of Tobias, I really enjoyed this character. He is above all my favorite character. The partnership between Tris and him couldn’t have been anymore perfect. They were both fire and ice. Roth placed them perfectly together like two puzzle pieces. Like Katniss Everdeen said, “That what I need to survive is not Gale’s fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction.” Roth’s characters were created perfectly for every moment in the story. They all blew me away.
A plot is what a good book runs on. And the plot for Divergent couldn’t be anymore clearer. The only thing that took me off guard was the twists. There was so many twists in this story that I couldn’t even handle it. Screaming and crying was involved. But what really shocked me was that all the twist were place perfectly in the story. Roth is the author of surprise. When one of the characters died I was not only shocked, but I was also cheering for something. Nothing predictable and that is just the way I like it. Divergent is the book to read if you wanted a story that is daring and new.
Drama, action, and uniqueness. Divergent was a roller coaster ride of a life time. I would read that book over and over again when I have the chance. Veronica Roth is now one of my favorite on my top authors list. A new writer coming into this business and getting my attention right away is something that rarely happens. Veronica Roth is competition for Suzanne Collins and I can’t wait to see where this fight takes us.
